As President Obama meets today with Mexican President Felipe Calderon, one issue that won't receive U.S. support is the idea of reinstating a ban on the sale of assault weapons.
Mexican government officials have asked for the move, alarmed by the large number of weapons moving south of the border, fueling drug violence in certain regions of that country.
The idea of bannings the sale of those weapons went nowhere again with the White House, as President Obama's Press Secretary Robert Gibbs threw cold water on it very quickly.
"I think there are other priorities that the President has," Gibbs said at a briefing this week.
"The President believes that through the enforcement of the existing gun laws, we can make a dent in that violence," Gibbs added.
Even if Mr. Obama wanted to push through such a gun control plan, it would be destined to fail in the Congress, as there is nowhere near a working majority for gun controls in either the House or the Senate.
The issue was brought up about a month by U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, but it went nowhere fast with both the White House and Congressional leaders, who made clear they were not at all interested in revisiting the assault weapons ban, or gun control in general.
"I think we need to enforce the laws we have right now," the Speaker said in late February.
That doesn't mean Pelosi and others wouldn't want to see extra gun controls, but they know what the scoreboard says right now.
And they remember the number of Democrats from more conservative areas who were forced to walk the plank by their leaders on gun control in the early 1990s, and then watched as they were defeated in the 1994 Republican Revolution.
So it's not surprising that not only do the Mexicans get a no, but so do Democrats when it comes to additional gun controls.
