Rick Perry Trial

By Martina Valverde

El Paso County Sheriff's Office

Today was a busy day for me at the El Paso County Courthouse.

The trial for Rick Perry also started today. He's charged with a number of things, but the key ones are aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and evading arrest.

This stems from a story KFOX 14 first reported to you last February.

Perry is accused of stabbing his girlfriend at a Montana Vista home and then trying to outrun El Paso County Sheriff's Deputies.

Deputies spotted his truck on Montana but he got on Loop 375 as headed for the northeast. The chase eventually ended after his truck hit spike strips on Spur 601.

Deputy Robert Lopez was on the stand today.

He said he responded to the address where the stabbing happened. He said he also followed the victim to the hospital where he photographed her injuries.

Those photos were shown to the jury.

The woman had cuts to her hands, chest and lower abdomen area.

Defense attorney Frank Macias asked about the victim's demeanor when he first saw her.

Lopez said she appeared scared.

Macias then pointed out that Lopez didn't add that into his report to which Lopez admitted it was an important detail and should have been in his report.

Macias then asked if he knew for certain the victim's injuries weren't self-inflicted.

Lopez answered he couldn't say for certain, but said his years of experience tell him they're not and the ones especially on her hands are telling of a woman trying to defend herself.

After a few heated words from the defense and prosecutors, Judge Maria Salas-Mendoza told both sides not to speak over each other, not to yell, and she would hope she wouldn't have to repeat herself.

The trial continues tomorrow.
