Mario Ramos Trial: Not Guilty Verdict

By Martina Valverde

Just after 6 p.m. I had just finished up my live shots for KFOX 14 News at 5 and I went back upstairs to the sixth floor where I have spent more than a week and a half eagerly waiting for this verdict.

Minutes later, the bell went off. The bailiff came out and notified me, the prosecution, and the defense team a verdict was reached.

That started a scramble to the courtroom. I took my seat as KFOX14 photographer Joe Najera set up the mic so we could record the verdict and set up his shot to get reaction.

Little by little, family of both Mario Ramos and Juan Ortegon and Ortegon himself filed in. Then Ramos and his wife entered the courtroom. I was sitting in front of her, but watching the video after the fact, Ramos' wife was seen making a cross and saying a prayer.

Everyone in the courtroom was told they would be escorted out if there were any outbursts regardless of the outcome.

Ramos was then asked to stand and the judge read the verdict. Ramos simply put his head down, Ortegon walked out.

Ramos was acquitted of the charges, but was told he needed to go to the court tomorrow to set his trial date for sexual assault charges in an unrelated case.

As soon as everyone was allowed to leave, defense lawyers Joe and Marc Rosales quickly escorted Ramos down a flight of stairs. I caught up with Ortegon at the elevator where he expressed his anger towards the judicial system. He said there are still bad cops out there and this sends the wrong message. His mom, in tears, shouted, "It's not fair, it's not fair."

The Rosales' then approached the media and only agreed to give a brief statement saying they were tired (they tried the whole case while under the weather). They said they are glad the jury took about 16 or 17 hours looking at all of the evidence.

Assistant District Attorney Dolores Reyes didn't wish to comment.

Ramos has been out of jail on bond and will remain free even when he goes onto his next trial. Of course, I'll keep you posted when that one is scheduled.

I won't disclose my thoughts on the trial as it is just my job to report the facts and both sides, but if you have any questions about this trial shoot me an e-mail: Martina.Valverde@kfoxtv.com.
