Triple Digit Heat Continues

By Brad Montgomery

After seeing yet another triple digit day for our Thursday with a high of 101 degrees, is this out of the ordinary or about average? You may be surprised to find out that so far we are below average as far as 100 degree days are concerned. Typically the hottest time of the year for the borderland is the month of June, right before the monsoon season begins in early July. And on average we see about fifteen 100+ degree days per year. This is because the atmosphere here is still dry as we get into the first part of summer. But once the monsoon season begins the added cloud cover and shower and thunderstorm activity does keep our high temperatures down some, although it can still feel rather uncomfortable as a result of the increased moisture and humidity.

So far this year although our temperatures have consistently been above average for the months of May and June we have not seen that many triple digit days. For the month of May we had only 1 day with a high of 100 degrees or higher and it was on the 22nd. So far this June we have had two days, another 100 degree day on the 2nd and a high of 101 on Thursday the 7th of June. That gives us only three 100+ degree days so far this year.

Looking ahead we are going to see a continuation of the hot dry conditions. We are not only expecting triple digit temperatures for the weekend, but upper 90s even approaching 100 degrees through the middle of next week. And we won’t be seeing any relief in the form of showers and thunderstorms as the moisture should continue to remain to our east and southeast.
