As we move March into April the dry line begins to move back into the borderland. What is the “dry line”? It’s where the desert dry air meets up with the more humid air moving in from the Gulf of Mexico. During this time of year the Dry line usually hags out between Midland Odessa and Abilene Texas, moving west during the nighttime hours and pushing east some during afternoon hours.
But this last week the dry line moved west all the way into western New Mexico. This allowing Gulf of Mexico Moisture to make it back into the desert. Once that moisture was in place it became fuel for much needed shower and thunderstorm activity. The moisture along with disturbances moving overhead helped to destabilize the atmosphere, creating showers and thunderstorms for both our Sunday and Tuesday evenings.
Officially we received .01 inches of rainfall at the airport with thunderstorms late Sunday evening. And with more showers and thunderstorms developing Tuesday evening lasting through early Wednesday we received .08 inches of rainfall Tuesday at the El Paso International Airport, with a Trace being recorded early Wednesday morning. Some areas around parts of east El Paso and the lower valley received closer to .20 inches of rainfall with the shower and storm activity late Tuesday through Wednesday. We average about .23 inches of rainfall for the entire month of April so any rainfall we receive this time of year is a good thing. So far for the year we have had .85 inches of rainfall, which still leaves us about .36 inches behind so far for the year.
I grew up in Cerritos, California, a suburb of Los Angeles and have had a love for nature since I was very young.
