Waters Recede, Skies Remain Gloomy In West El Paso

Posted: 8:19 pm MDT September 11, 2009Updated: 10:03 pm MDT September 11, 2009

A passing storm drenched parts of west El Paso Friday afternoon, but the rain subsided by nightfall.

The streets dried and most of the flood water washed away in west El Paso.

But Friday afternoon, water completely covered several streets including the intersection of Mesa and Brentwood.

"In between Executive and Sunland Park, it got pretty heavy," said Gustavo Deanda, of west El Paso. "And the traffic got pretty slow."

The storm dropped marble-sized chunks of hail in parts of west El Paso.

For some, the stormy weather was a nice change of pace.

"I think it's fresh," said Maria Cabral. "And the darkness, I like. I wouldn't mind it if it would be raining every day."

But at the height of the storm, it was more like a nightmare for others. Xavier Escobedo, the owner of Veranda flower shop, stacked sandbags against his store's doors to prevent rising water from seeping inside.

"I heard the emergency broadcast system. Everytime I hear that, I pay attention because as you can see, it gets very bad here," he said.

According to our weathernets, .86 of an inch dropped outside the KFOX news station in west El Paso.
