Volvo Takes Safety to Pedestrians With Exterior Airbags

It's the world's first car airbag to protect pedestrians. In Volvo's new V40 model it's contained beneath the bonnet. Sensors located at the front of the car can tell instantly if the vehicle has hit a pedestrian, and instruct the bag to deploy. It works at speeds of between 20 and 50 kilometres per hour, according to Volvo safety systems strategist Jan Ivarsson.
