Starbucks iPad theft suspect identified

By: Jamel Valencia
EL PASO, Texas -- Police identify the suspect in an iPad theft.

Police said Carlos Guerrero, 18, was arrested and taken into custody for trying to steal an iPad 5 Wednesday morning.

The incident happened at the Starbucks on Mesa Street near Sunland Park Drive at about 9:30 a.m.

Guerrero stole the tablet from a customer who was sitting at the coffee shop, said police.

An Army Reserve officer and businessman, Julio Diaz, ran after the thief, reported the El Paso Times.

He said he heard someone shout, "Stop him!" Diaz said he turned around and ran after the thief.

"I was fortunate enough to be close to him. I saw him running, so, I'm an Army officer; I care about the community. I jumped and did what anyone else would do," Diaz said.

Diaz said that the thief dropped the iPad and kept running. Diaz said he noticed a red

Taotao 50 scooter was left running nearby and, assuming it belonged to the thief, took its keys.

Diaz said he went back inside the Starbucks, returned the iPad to the owner and gave the keys to the scooter to police officers at the scene.

Other good Samaritans were able to catch Guerrero and hand him over to police officers when they arrived.

The man was charged with evading arrest.

Guerrero doesn't face any other charges, said police.
