Northeast El Paso residents living without gas service

By: Stacey Welsh
EL PASO, Texas -- People living in a northeast El Paso apartment complex said they have not had gas service since about three weeks ago.

Texas Gas Service confirmed the company shut off the gas at 3827 Tyler Ave. on July 28 due to lack of payment. Tenants said it is their landlord's responsibility to pay.

"In the contract, it says the landlord is responsible for the gas, water and garbage," northeast El Paso resident Fernando Morales said.

Residents said not having gas means they can't cook using their stoves.

"I work so early in the morning that I have to take a cold shower every day, and that's not right," Morales said.

Residents said their landlord is Daniel Sanchez. KFOX14 tried contacting Sanchez, but did not hear back Friday.

If the gas service does not come back on, residents said they do not want to continue paying $300-$400 in rent.

"It's not my fault. I paid my rent on time, and I have children," northeast El Paso resident Mary Ann Arevalo said.

Arevalo and Morales said their landlord even threatened to evict them if they don't pay.

Texas Gas Service said it removed the gas meters from that property but would not specify why.
