Mother in Dona Ana County child abuse case arrested

By: Jesse Martinez
DONA ANA COUNTY, N.M. Authorities made an additional arrest in the child abuse case in which a 4-year-old girl was hospitalized in critical condition.

As KFOX14 previously reported, a woman left her daughter in her girlfriends care while she went to work.

Yvette Pinon-Carbajal told the mother when she came home that her daughter slipped in the bathtub and slept for most of the day. When the child had a seizure the two rushed her to the hospital, officials said.

Officials said the statement Pinon-Carbajal gave was not consistent with the childs injuries, which left her in a medically-induced coma.

Pinon-Carbajal was charged with one count of child abuse and one count of child abuse resulting in great bodily harm. She was booked into the county jail with bail set at $250,000.

Authorities arrested the girls mother, Maria Gurrola-Nevarez, 23, on Friday. She faces the same charges and also had an outstanding warrant for failure to pay fines.

She was booked into the county jail with bail totaling $150,000.

The 4-year-old remains at an El Paso area hospital in critical condition.
