Disagreement about sale of car ends in beating, arrest

By: Jamel Valencia
LAS CRUCES, N.M. - A Las Cruces man is accused of beating his neighbor during a discussion about the sale of a car.

Witnesses told police John Hamilton, 46, struck his neighbor when he became upset with what he considered a "low-ball offer."

Police responded to the incident in the 3900 block of Saddle Fork Court on Sunday.

When the neighbor walked away Hamilton struck him, knocking him to the ground, said police.

They said Hamilton reportedly disarmed the neighbor, who was legally carrying a holstered .40 caliber handgun.

After taking the 61-year-old's man weapon from him, he struck and kicked the neighbor multiple times while armed with the handgun.

The victims injuries were not life-threatening.

After the alleged beating Hamilton returned to his home, where he hid the neighbors
handgun in a bedroom. Police at the scene were able to find the hidden gun and placed Hamilton under arrest.

He was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $10,000.
