UPDATE: Man's body found in UTEP campus arroyo

By: Stacey Welsh

EL PASO, Texas -- Police found a man's body in an arroyo on the University of Texas at El Paso campus Saturday afternoon. The El Paso Police Department is assisting the UTEP Police Department with the investigation, but does not suspect foul play.

EPPD said a call came in at approximately 3:15 p.m. to report a body found near Miner Village student housing buildings. Police found the body at the end of a drain in the arroyo.

Police blocked off the scene for about four hours Saturday, near the intersection of Kerbey and Oregon.

One man who works in the area didn't want to give his name, but told KFOX14 he belives the man could have been a transient. He said he often sees people living in the arroyo where the body was found.

"They hang out in this ravine, and they cook and drink. They go to the 7-Eleven nearby. There's always a group there," he said.

Because El Paso has seen eight straight days of triple-digit temperatures as of Saturday, the man also said he wouldn't be surprised if heat stroke or dehydration could have led up to the death.

"In the summer time, there's not that many because it's so hot. They've told me they've gone down to Mesa Street where there's a bigger bridge, and they can hide under the bridge there," he said.

Police recovered the man's body at around 6:30 p.m.The El Paso Police department said the UTEP Police Department will handle the investigation.
