Jury selection begins for long-standing Las Cruces murder trial

LAS CRUCES, N.M. Jury selection began for the trial of a man accused of beating and slashing a man to death while in prison.

As KFOX14 previously reported, Dominic Montoya was accused of killing Adam Avalos inside a shower at the Dona Ana County prison in 2006.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reported Montoya has an extensive criminal history, including a murder charge in 1999.

Montoya currently faces charged of first-degree murder and possession of a deadly weapon by a prisoner as well as tampering with evidence.

The charges were looming for more than eight years because of numerous court delays resulting in at least 12 trial dates being set over the years.

Records show this is the oldest pending murder case in the Third Judicial Court.
