Humane Society partners with city to offer special adoption rates

By: Gina Benitez
EL PASO, Texas -- The Humane Society of El Paso is teaming up with Animal Services to adopt out as many pets as possible.

The "Be Pawesome" campaign starts Saturday and for the next two weeks, all rescues over 12 weeks old will have a special $60 adoption fee.

"Just in 2014 from January to May, over 7,000 animals have been euthanized. We launched a similar campaign two years ago and we had over 500 animals adopted between both the city shelter and ourselves so we're really hoping that we reach that 500 mark," said Kandolite Flores, associate director for the Humane Society of El Paso.

This time of year is especially difficult for the shelter.

"In the summer, spring, we see intakes rise. A lot of animals coming in and unwanted litters and then we see adoptions drop," Flores said.

Animal intake isn't the only thing on the rise.

Both parvo and distemper, often deadly viruses, also spike during this time of year.

"At this point, we are in the clear here at the shelter. We no longer have any animals that are showing symptoms of distemper. However, that doesn't mean that out in the community there are other animals that can pass this to your pet," Flores said.

Trish Macdonald came to the shelter today to find another addition to the family.

She already has two dogs at home.

"We decided to take a look around, found one earlier this afternoon, came back brought our dogs, but she had already been adopted. Then we found Brandy and she's going to become part of our family," Macdonald said.

She didn't know about the latest campaign, but thinks it'll be a huge help.

"I think it's wonderful, it'll bring people in to adopt the dogs and hopefully find these dogs a forever home," Macdonald said.
