EL PASO, Texas -- A portion of U.S. 54 near the Hercules Avenue overpass was closed for several hours as police investigated a deadly crash Thursday morning.

Police said a man died on the scene following a three-car accident around 1:30 a.m. Thursday.

Police determined John Colon, of Heywood, Calif., was speeding in a white Chevrolet Impala north on U.S. 54 in the right lane, and he was trying to catch a blue Hyundai in the far left lane driven by Rogelio Gonzalez, 20.

Colon, 27, then rear-ended a Ford F-350 and was lodged underneath the truck as the two swerved left across three lanes and hit the Hyundai, police said.

Police said that when officers arrived on the scene, a man later identified as Colon was trapped inside one of the cars and was then pronounced dead on the scene.

All northbound lanes on U.S. 54 between Dyer Street and Hondo Pass Avenue were shut down following the accident.

The scene of the crash spread over a quarter of a mile and the area was closed off for 13 hours, police said.

Firefighters were also on the scene assessing some of the patients; however no one had to be taken to the hospital, police have not said if anyone else was injured.

Police said it is not known at this time if alcohol was a factor.
