MHM: Man charged with assaulting El Paso police officer

By: Elena Arteaga

EL PASO, Texas -- An El Paso police officer is injured after trying to stop a 'suspicious' man in Northeast El Paso.

Authorities said officers were called to an apartment complex in the Northeast at about 1:00 a.m. Saturday, in the 4500 block of Arlen. Officers had received calls about narcotics use in the area.

The officers were conducting a foot patrol through the complex, when they came across a man in a blue or green four-door sedan they said was acting suspicious. Police said that man-- later identified as Hector Eduardo Lopez-- was driving in reverse in an unsafe manner.

When the officers made contact with Lopez, they said they saw drugs inside of the vehicle. But that's when authorities said Lopez grabbed the arm of one of the officers, and sped off while holding onto the officer. The unidentified officer managed to free himself before he is said to have violently fallen onto the pavement.

The officer managed to move out of the way as Lopez sped off, exiting the apartment complex.

Lopez is now wanted on a charge of aggravated assault on a public servant, and an unrelated parole violation warrant for possession of controlled substance.

Anyone with information on Lopez's whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers of El Paso at 915-566-8477. Remember, you can remain anonymous.
