NM State Police: Deputy skids onto dirt shoulder, strikes and kills pedestrian

By: Jesse Martinez
DONA ANA COUNTY, N.M. -- New Mexico State Police released more information about a deadly pedestrian accident involving a Dona Ana County Sheriff's deputy on April 1.

State police said the deputy, who was identified as Eden Terrazas, was responding to a report of a sighting of an AMBER Alert victim in the area of Interstate 25 near Mesquite, N.M.

The alert was issued earlier that day out of Albuquerque, N.M.

State police said Terrazas failed to negotiate a curve in the road near the intersection of State Road 192 and Sequoia Road.

The vehicle went into a skid and crossed into the westbound lane and into a dirt shoulder, state police said.

Natividad Nunez, 44, of Mesquite was standing on the dirt shoulder and in the path of the deputys vehicle.

The vehicle struck Nunez, and she was taken to Memorial General Hospital where she died from her injuries, state police said.

Terrazas was not injured in the crash.

State police are investigating the crash and will determine whether or not charges will be filed against the deputy.
