CBP: El Paso man busted at the border with big heroin load

An El Paso native was arrested after he attempted to smuggle more than 17 pounds of heroin.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the Paso Del Norte international bridge seized the heroin Monday morning.

Officials said 21-year-old Herbert Garza attempted to cross the border with $566,400 worth of the contraband into El Paso.

CBP drug-sniffing dog Chip alerted officers to Garzas car; they said they found 10 tape-wrapped bundles of heroin hidden in a floor compartment.

Garza was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations special agents.

Hes facing charges associated with the failed smuggling attempt.
