Ammunition goes off as fire crews fight car fire

EL PASO, Texas - Firefighters had to take cover after several rounds of ammunition go off inside a burning SUV, said firefighters.

It happened on the parking lot of a triplex around 4:40 a.m. Tuesday on Biscaine Street and Sun Valley Drive.

Officers had to shut down Sun Valley Drive between U.S 54 and Bon Aire Drive for more than an hour until it was safe for traffic to go through again.

When firefighters arrived, they said they heard some of the ammunition go off and had to fight the fire from a distance.

"The initial attack was done from approximately, 30-40 feet away when they heard the sounds of the ammunition first going off,"" said Lt. Tristan Berry. "Then after everything, the sound died down from the ammunition they preceded closer into extinguishing the rest of the fire."

No one was hurt, but police did shut down a portion of Sun Valley Drive until it was safe to open again.

El Paso firefighters are investigating what started the fire.
