Las Cruces mother accused of shaking infant son arrested

By: Jesse Martinez
LAS CRUCES, N.M. A 22-year-old Las Cruces mother faces child abuse charges for allegedly shaking her 6-month-old son, police said.

Marisela Beltrans son Jacob was taken to the hospital around 5 a.m. Tuesday because he was crying and repeatedly vomiting, police said.

Beltran first told the hospital staff that the child slipped out of a car seat on March 13 and hit his head on the ground, police said.

Officials discovered the child had a small abrasion on the back of his head, but there werent any other signs of injury, police said.

Detectives said the child appeared to be developmentally delayed and was unable to support his head like he should at that age, police said.

Beltran was interviewed by authorities and said Jacob wiggled out of the car seat and hit his head.

Police said the childs lack of physical development would most likely make him unable to wiggle his way from the car seat.

The investigation determined that on Monday, Beltrans son was crying and she picked him up and shook him twice for about 10 seconds each time.

Beltran was charged with intentional child abuse and booked into the county jail, with bail set at $10,000.

Custody of the child was given to the states Children, Youth and Families Department.
