El Pasoans expected to conserve water when watering outdoors

By: Chrisdyann Uribe
EL PASO, Texas This summer, El Pasoans will be restricted when watering their yards due to the continued drought.

El Paso Water Utilities is focusing on conserving water and hopes residents are on board.

"We ask for the public's support in being able to conserve as much water as possible to avoid any increased restrictions. Every year we ask for the publics support from April 1 through Sept 30 in terms of watering outdoors. This years no different." said Hector Gonzalez, government affairs manager for EPWU.

They said the lack of rain means less water available for everyone.

"We expect to get late release water from Elephant Butte and early cutoff," explained Gonzalez.

There will be set times and days when residents can water outdoors twice week.

"You cannot water during the time of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. There is no residential outdoor watering on Mondays and Tuesdays. Thursdays and Saturdays are for even numbered addresses. Wednesdays and Sundays are for odd numbered addresses," Gonzalez said.

If anyone is caught breaking these rules, the price is a pretty penny.

"We do have some enforcement personnel out there that are issuing citations and the citations can be up to $500," Gonzalez said.

In 2012 to 2013 EPWU reported 1,065 warnings given and 25 citations were issued.

They advise using a sprinkler system than a water hose since the water from a sprinkler is contained to a certain area and wont waste water which runs into the roads.

"We obviously don't want anybody to be watering and have the water run off either in the sidewalks or streets. Its always a good idea to monitor," Gonzalez said.
