KFOX14 photojournalist at SXSW was blocks away from deadly crash

By: Gina Benitez
AUSTIN, Texas -- Two people are dead and about two dozen are injured after a driver plowed through barricades and into a crowd at the South by Southwest festival in Austin.

Police said the driver, Rashad Owens, was driving under the influence and trying to evade authorities when the crash happened.

Police believe Owens intentionally drove into the crowd.

KFOX14 photojournalist Josh Salazar is currently at South by Southwest.

He was at a show inside a club a few blocks away when it happened.

"As soon as we came out of the club that we were at, that's all people were talking about. That's all you could see was a big, chaotic scene around that area," Salazar said.

Salazar said at first, rumors swirled as to what may have happened.

"We couldn't see much besides the crash scene and police blocking off that area. We didn't know what to think. We didn't really know what was going on until we got home, and turned on the news and heard what happened." " Salazar said.

A day later, the masses are still packing downtown Austin but Salazar said the crash is still the talk of the town.

"You just try to not let it bother you so much. I mean, I guess now, we're all kind of going to be a little more careful," Salazar said.

The suspect involved faces two counts of capital murder and numerous counts of aggravated assault with a vehicle.
