Teens face possible charges after spraying pepper spray in Las Cruces classroom

By: Jamel Valencia
LAS CRUCES, N.M. - An eighth-grade classroom at Lynn Middle School was evacuated Thursday after a 14-year-old student deployed pepper spray from an oleoresin capsicum canister.

The girl released some of the spray around 2:30 p.m. with 26 students and a teacher in the classroom, said Las Cruces police.

They said the girl got the pepper spray from student and may not have known what it was.

No major injuries were reported but some students were being treated for inflammation.

The classroom was evacuated while school maintenance staff aired out the room with a fan.

Pepper spray can irritate the eyes and may cause temporary blindness.

Police said charges against the two girls are possible.
