Deputies search for wanted man who shot victim in the knee

By: Jesse Martinez
CHAPARRAL, N.M. Deputies are on the lookout for a man who they said shot another man in the leg Wednesday night.

A spokesperson for the Dona Ana County Sheriffs Office said a man identified as Raymond Montoya or Pee Wee shot a man Wednesday.

Deputies said they received word of the shooting around 5:30 p.m. when a man called 911 to say he was shot in the leg.

Deputies arrived to the 400 block of Oasis Drive, and they determined the victim told Montoya to leave his home.

Witnesses told investigators Montoya was trying to leave with a 15-year-old girl, who was the victims girlfriends daughter. The teen allegedly wanted to leave with Montoya and another 13-year-old friend, deputies said.

An argument escalated between the victim and Montoya, and they got into a fight as the victim tried to close his gate, deputies said.

At that point, Montoya allegedly shot the victim in the knee and left.

Montoya is still on the run, and deputies ask the public to call the sheriffs office at 575-525-8812 with any information on his whereabouts.

He is wanted on multiple charges including attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
