Blanco leads District 76 Texas state rep. race

By: Stacey Welsh
EL PASO, Texas -- Cesar Blanco led early voting to elect the new District 76 state representative with 1,858 votes, Norma Chavez is in second with 1,378 votes and State Rep. Naomi Gonzalez is in a close third with 1,337 votes. All are Democrats.

That leaves Blanco with about 41 percent of the vote, Chavez with about 30 percent and Gonzalez with about 29 percent.

District 76 runs from south of Interstate 10 to downtown and the Socorro city limit. It also includes some of the poorest neighborhoods in El Paso.

Naomi Gonzalez is the incumbent since 2011, and Chavez held the office for 14 years before Gonzalez was elected.

Blanco has served as chief of staff for U.S. Rep. Pete Gallego. He said he faced challenges getting to know constituents, as he is the only candidate who has not held this office previously.

Gonzalez said she expected it to be a close race, and she also expects to go into a run-off election.
