Borderland puppy found without paw undergoes emergency surgery

By: Stephanie Guadian
EL PASO, Texas -- A Borderland puppy found with severe injuries all over its body is now being cared for by a volunteer in Silver City, New Mexico.

The animal was discovered wandering in Anthony, Texas. She was missing a paw and there were other signs of trauma. She had deep slash wounds from her neck to her tail. Its still not known if the wounds were caused by an accident or if someone purposely cut off her tail and wrapped her possibly in barbed wire.

Angel Alvarado is a volunteer with the Change of Heart Pit Bull rescue. He and another volunteer are caring for the black and white puppy named Panda.

She's doing really well. She got her arm amputated and her tail, said Angel Alvarado.

The rescue group is paying for the puppy's medical bills. Angel recently took Panda to a vet when an infection in her tail started to spread. That visit led to an emergency operation.

Instead of putting her under anesthesia twice, he thought it would be better to amputate the arm at the same time, said Alvarado.

She doesn't seem to miss the tail --- but, she is having to learn to walk and run on three legs. Still, Panda is like any puppy. She loves to eat, play and sleep a lot. Oh yeah, she is a bundle of joy, said Alvarado.

Once her wounds heal -- Panda will start her rehabilitation. Despite going through so much at such a young age, she's showing no signs of fear based behavior or depression. And with the help of volunteers like Angel, Panda will soon be well enough to be put up for adoption.

Panda had been at the center of a dispute between two animal rescue groups. Both claimed ownership of the puppy. That's been cleared up -- and Panda is now being taken care of by A Change of Heart Pit Bull rescue.
