Official: Inmate tried to hide heroin from officer

By: Jesse Martinez
DONA ANA COUNTY, N.M. A man sent to jail for not paying fines also faces drug charges for trying to hide a small bag of heroin in his rectum, an official said.

A spokesperson for the Dona Ana County Sheriffs Office said Albert Sandoval was being taken from one cell to another when an office noticed he was trying to remove something from his jail-issued shirt.

When the officer told Sandoval to hand it over, Sandoval tried to insert it into his rectum, an official said.

The officer approached Sandoval, who then tried to swallow the small bag, and after a brief struggle, the officer grabbed the bag, an official said.

The small bag was later determined to have heroin in it, and Sandoval, 34, was charged with felony heroin possession and tampering with evidence.

He faces disciplinary action for having the drug, making a false statement to a detention officer and violating detention center policy.

Authorities said this incident was the second heroin interception at the facility in the past five days.
