SISD hosts annual James Butler Spring Games

By: Jesse Martinez
EL PASO, Texas Socorro Independent School District hosted its seventh annual James Butler Spring Games on Wednesday.

District officials said nearly 1,000 special needs students took part in the track and field events in the morning.

The event at the SISD Student Activities Complex in east El Paso included walks, races, wheelchair races and javelin throws.

The games were played in two sessions, with the secondary students from 9 a.m. to noon and the elementary students from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Each session began with a mini parade of all the athletes.

This was the first year the games were endorsed by Special Olympics Texas, and the Special Olympics will consider the participants in the James Butler Spring Games as athletes in training.

The games were named after a former physical education teacher, coach and adaptive physical education teacher in the special education department who, officials said, dedicated his life to making sure students succeeded in athletics and special education.
