2013 APD officer-involved shooting released

By: Elizabeth O'Hara
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Albuquerque Police Department released lapel camera video from an officer-involved shooting last October.

The Albuquerque Journal reported it is the third shooting in four years involving Officer Brian Pitzer.

Pitzer was in pursuit of Joaquin Ortega, 34, following reports Ortega was driving erratically, robbed a woman and her grandchild and attempted a carjacking.

The video began seconds after Pitzer exited his police unit. He repeatedly asked Ortega to put his hands in view of the officer. Ortega then began to run away from Pitzer. Pitzer fired eight shots. The video shows four of those shots happened after Ortega threw a gun away.

The Journal reports: former APD chief Allen Banks said Ortega had turned toward the officer with a gun in his hand between two parked cars before he was shot at least three times. Banks showed a still from the lapel video that he said shows Ortega turned toward the officer with a gun in his hand. But in the video, Ortega appears to be running away from Pitzer between those cars and it is not clear if he turns around as hes running.

Ortega survived the shooting and was taken into custody.

Albuquerque Police made no comment following its release of the video Monday.
