Family mourns man shot and murdered in east El Paso

By Crystal Price
EL PASO, Texas - Ana Bowler sits at her parent's east El Paso home on Sunday afternoon looking through old family pictures - in particular, pictures her younger brother, Anthony Bowler.

"When he was born, I was 9, he was my toy for many years," Bowler said. "I'm going to miss him very much, he treated me like I was his mom."

However, nothing could prepare her for the phone call she would receive on Saturday.

"My my mom called me and I couldn't believe it, we all thought it was a joke," said Bowler's sister, Ana Bowler.

But it was not a joke, as her baby brother Anthony had been shot and killed in east El Paso.

Authorities have arrested Alberto Antonio Mendiola, who they said shot and killed Bowler at 11220 War Cloud.

Friends of Bowler's tell me he had gone to this home for a cookout on Friday evening.

El Paso police said this is also the home where Mendiola's estranged wife and children were.

Authorities said sometime after midnight, Mendiola came up to the home with a rifle and shot Bowler multiple times as he attempted to secure the back door.

Family and friends are left asking why Mendiola would ever want to harm their loved one.

"I cannot think what went through this guy's mind," said Lulu Cordero, a friend of Bowler's. "I'm sure Bowler was just trying to protect that family, that's all he was trying to do."

Friends and family are torn apart by the loss.

Ana Bowler said her brother was studying to become a physical therapist and that he had an MMA fight scheduled for next month.

"The hardest part is not having him here," Bowler said. "Our family is heartbroken by the situation and for him to die the way he did is unreal."

Mendiola has been booked in the El Paso County Detention Facility. His bond has been set at $253,000.
