Canutillo student heads to Texas Cupcake BattleBy: Jesse MartinezCANUTILLO, Texas Students from area high schools used their cupcake baking and decorating skills to compete in the 2014 El Paso Area High School Cupcake Battle. Students from Eastlake, El Dorado, Socorro, San Elizario and Canutillo high schools and El Paso Independent School District Center For Career and Technical Education fought for a chance to compete in the Texas Cupcake Battle. This competition is unique because it allows culinary arts students to show their range in abilities and kitchen skills, said Melinda Castillo, the hospitality and tourism instructor at Canutillo High School. They not only show that they can bake a delicious, intricate cupcake, but they can also market it by being creative and catering it to a specific type of client. Various cupcakes including tres leches, pineapple in bikini, mango and chile were on the front lines, but a Canutillo High School students smores cupcakes was the one that took the cake. Kashmir Flores won first place in the Best of Show category and she earned a spot to complete in the state competition April 21-22 in Allen, Texas.
