Finish date for Sportspark renovations still unknown

By: Joshua Zuber
EL PASO, Texas-The El Paso County Sportspark still doesn't have an official finish date for its renovations.

Six out of 10 fields are open at the Sportspark.

All of them should have been open August last year but now no one has a clue when it will be completed.

A reported continued dispute between the architect and contractor is keeping the park from opening.

"What the county wants is for the field to be open. Get our youngsters and seniors to be able to play in all 10 fields," El Paso County Commissioner Carlos Leon said.

A new clubhouse is also part of the plans.

Now a bonding company is in charge to mediate.

The delay has softball players like James Graham upset.

He was excited to show off the new facilities to more than a dozen out of of-town senior teams for the 14th annual Chili Pepper Classic.

"We really tooted our horns, advertised it to out of-town teams," Graham said.

But instead, Graham said, the event got a few too many strikes.

More than half the games were played at the Sportspark.

The others were at Ascarate Park.

"We felt real bad for the teams coming to El Paso," Graham said.

As for what county commissioners will do to speed up the opening date all options are on the table.

"Do we direct our bonding company to find a new contractor? And that's what we are talking about," Leon said.

No action was taken Monday. The county judge told KFOX 14 this item will come before its court likely in two weeks.
