LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- A motorcyclist was killed after crashing with a car in Central Las Cruces.

Police said the 21-year-old Dominic Phillips was driving east on Spruce Ave. before 6:30 P.M. Wednesday, and may have been speeding, according to witnesses.

As the motorcyclist approached two vehicles stopped on the inside lane of traffic, police said it appears the motorcyclist veered into the westbound inside lane of traffic to avoid two vehicles stopped at the intersection of Virginia St. and Spruce Ave. One of those vehicles included a Las Cruces police unit who was waiting for oncoming traffic to pass before turning left onto Virginia.

But when the motorcyclist crossed the double-yellow center dividing lines, Phillips crashed into a 1995 Chrysler LeBaron that was traveling west on Spruce.

Phillips was thrown off his 2012 Honda sportsbike as the motorcycle caught fire.

Las Cruces firefighters responded to the scene, and extinguished the fire while emergency personnel tended to the motorcyclist. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 20-year-old woman driving the Chrysler was not injured.

Police said they found a helmet at the scene of the crash, but investigators are not sure if Phillips was wearing it at the time.

No charges are expected to be filed, police said.
