Deadly pedestrian accident in South Central El Paso

EL PASO, Texas - A man is killed in south central El Paso after he is struck by his own vehicle, officials say.

According to the El Paso Police Department, the incident occurred Saturday at 7:29 a.m. at 5757 Las Brisas Circle when Isidro Olivares, 62, exited his blue 2006 Chevrolet Tahoe with the engine running and the vehicle in gear.

Police were notified of the incident after someone in the area saw Olivares trapped under his vehicle. Investigators believe that Olivares had been inside his vehicle and exited for an unknown reason but failed to put the vehicle in park, and that is when the vehicle began moving backwards, striking him.

Olivares was taken to University Medical Center but later died of his injuries.

Neighbors told KFOX 14 that they are shaken up by what happened.

They said Olivares had worked as a mail carrier for years and that he had retired just last year.

Neighbors described Olivares as a kind neighbor who always said hello.

Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in this accident. This is the ninth traffic related death this year.
