Former constable, volunteer officer arrested on smuggling chargeBy: Jesse MartinezEL PASO, Texas A former El Paso County constable was arrested last week and is accused of trying to smuggle goods into the United States. Court documents show Alejandro Gamboa, a former El Paso County constable for precinct 6, was arrested on March 19 on one count of smuggling goods, and one count of registration and exporting arms/munitions without a license. Documents show Gamboa tried to export about 30 ceramic plate inserts for ballistic vests between June 1 to July 26, 2013. Gamboa, who was a volunteer officer for the Anthony Police Department, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to the charges. Anthony Chief of Police Carlos Enriquez released the following statement following Gamboas arrest: (Gamboa) was a reserve officer for the Anthony Police Department. He was arrested on allegations that was unrelated to his duties and was not conducting Anthony Police Department duties. When we were made aware of his arrest and subsequently verified it, we terminated his volunteer status with the agency and had him relinquished all issued equipment. He was with a department for less than one year in the capacity of a reserve, volunteer officer.
