Rates for parking meters near ballpark may triple

By: Chrisdyann Uribe
EL PASO, Texas The rates for the future parking meters on West Franklin Avenue may increase from $0.75 to $2.50.
Its on the agenda for city council, which may be approved tomorrow.
How do we deal with that area in terms of parking spaces? What are the rates and what are the hours? Where we can charge, said Ted Marquez, El Paso Transportation Director.
The hours to charge for parking would be extended from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, to 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
It would only affect the meters on West Franklin Avenue from Durango Street to Interstate 10.
The central business district -- were not changing the parking meters, the rates nor the hours. Were still maintaining that, Marquez said.
Many El Pasoans are against the possible increase in rates and times for the meters.
I think any jump in that amount is unfair because its an increase that people arent used to and expecting. I hope that the rate is not approved. I hope that meters are placed for our safety but I hope that the meters are placed at a reasonable rate, said El Pasoan Ken Heidelberg.
Others are okay with paying more but not as much as $2.50.
$1.50 to me sounds more reasonable. I think its a little much right now especially with todays economy, especially if they want people to go to the ballpark and enjoy the games, said El Pasoan Stephanie Conteras.
The El Paso Chihuahuas will play their home opener at Southwest University Park against the Frezno Grizzlies April 28.
