Elderly man marks 18th flu-related deathBy: Jesse MartinezEL PASO, Texas Although new flu cases have declined, health officials said an elderly man is the latest flu-related death in El Paso. A total of 18 flu-related deaths were reported this season. About 3,800 total cases have been reported with 79 new cases this week, officials said. The elderly man, whose age was not given, had at least one underlying chronic health condition and died last week. Our thoughts and prayers go out to this mans family and friends. We extend our condolences to all those who have lost loved ones as we continue to work diligently to help prevent more loss of life in our community, said Fernando Gonzalez, lead epidemiologist with the citys health department. Officials continue to urge residents to practice prevention including the 4 Cs: 1. CLEAN-Wash your hands often. Scrub your hands for at least 30 seconds with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand cleaner. 2. COVER-Cover your cough. Use a tissue to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. Dont have a tissue? The crook of your elbow will do. 3. CONTAIN-Contain germs by steering clear of others who are sick. If you do get sick, stay home until youre well again, so you dont spread more germs. 4. CALL-Call or see your doctor if you or your child has a fever of greater than 100 degrees.
