Sun Metro offers alternative route to Chihuahua games

By: Genevieve Curtis
EL PASO, Texas - For many baseball fans who plan to head to El Paso Chihuahua games, getting into the seats, will be the easy part. Most tell KFOX14 they still don't know where they are going to park.

Maybe the Union Plaza? said Emanuel Salazar.

Tuesday, City Council will consider tripling rates at meter and extending hours among other changes. If that happens, Jose Ramirez said he'll be looking for other options.

"It's way too pricey and you're in the game and what if it goes to extras or something? I'll just be a huge hassle," said Ramirez.

Sun Metro is offering one alternative route for fans. The bus service will offer a park and ride for baseball fans, running from five different parts of town: west, east, far east, northeast and the Lower Valley.

"It's just easy to let us do the driving you can park for free at our facilities, said Laura Cruz-Acosta," spokesperson for Sun Metro.

Burt right now the service will only run for Friday, Saturday and Sunday games.

We have to test the waters and make sure the need is there, said Cruz-Acosta.

It costs $3 per person for a round-trip fare. For a car full of people that could end up costing just as much as parking at a meter or in a parking structure.

But for those like Victor Salas who will be traveling from the eastside, the Park and Ride program would help him save on gas and the headache.

"I think it would be cool to go with a couple friends, like a tailgate," said Salas.

A downside for those hoping to stay in the downtown area after the last pitch, the bus service will stop about half an hour after the game ends.

"It's not really going to allow for folks to go bar hopping afterwards," said Cruz-Acosta.

Salas said he doesn't mind heading home post-game.

"I think I would still take it just to go to the game and experience the ballpark," said Salas.

But for those like Ramirez who want to make a night out of it, they're still figuring out their game plans.

Sun Metro is still working on the details. Here are the locations for the park and ride. Parking is free at the locations and children 5 and under ride free.
