Two Las Cruces city employees arrested, accused of embezzlement

By: Jesse Martinez
LAS CRUCES, N.M. Two Las Cruces city employees were arrested Thursday following accusations of falsifying public documents and misappropriating materials, police said.

Robert Medina Jr., 43, and Jesus Vasquez, 31, are employees of the citys Transportation Department. They are accused of diverting resources to work on a private project and misappropriating materials purchased by the city, police said.

Police said they first took notice after an anonymous tip in Aug. 2013. They interviewed witnesses and went through several receipts and purchase orders, police said.

Detectives discovered that in July 2010, Medina, Vasquez and another city employee built a concrete patio at Medinas home.

The cement used for the patio was billed to the city, and employees worked on the project while on duty, police said.

Medina and Vasquez were charged with two counts of forgery and two counts of conspiracy. Medina was charged with two additional counts of embezzlement, and Vasquez was charged with one count of embezzlement.

The two were arrested Thursday and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bail set at $25,000 each.

The investigation is ongoing, and police believe additional charges may be possible.
