Tornillo ISD holds meeting for public input on superintendent; only one parent attends
By: Jesse Martinez
EL PASO, Texas The Tornillo Independent School District is looking for a new leader, and officials held a public meeting Monday to get community input on what theyre looking for in a superintendent.
However, only one parent showed up to the meeting.
Its sad; I wish we had more involvement and that way you can speak out for whatever you think should be done or what you want for your child or what is in the best interest in the community or the school itself. To get better, said Al Flores.
School officials said they want public input so they can tell the hiring firm what qualifications they need for the job posting.
We would love to be closer to have someone that is here for the long haul who is ready to lead our district. We really need some stability and would love to have that by the end of the school year, said Marlene Bullard, Tornillo ISD board president.
Parents are still encouraged to visit campuses and fill out a questionnaire with the qualifications they want to see in a superintendent.
Last year, the school board voted to terminate then interim superintendent Margaret Ruybe, who had also been pulling double duty as the Tornillo High School principal. The district said it wanted to give her a break.
The districts original superintendent, Paul Vranish, was put on leave in November 2012 after the Texas Education Agencys findings showed questionable reimbursements made to Vranish and his wife, who was also a district employee.
