UTEP men's basketball team wins first four road conference games for first time in close to 60 years

EL PASO, Texas -- After winning their first four conference road games for the first time since the 1955-56 season, the Miners were welcomed home by proud fans Sunday.
"We kind of dropped off for the last couple decades but we're bringing that back and we better strap in because this year, next year and the following years, we're going to do very incredible things with the Miners," said Gregg Bush, a west El Paso resident.
"I think they've had to overcome a lot of adversity and still going through that, being able to come off with the way they do every night, and give it all they got, it shows a lot of character," said Roman Hernandez, an east El Paso resident.
The team has no shortage of recent setbacks.
Probably most notably, three players were kicked off the team last month after they allegedly betted on sports games.
Then, the FBI got involved.
But the setbacks seem to have only made the team stronger.
"The beautiful thing about all this is that these guys really like each other and they're playing for each other," said head basketball coach Tim Floyd.
Though they're on a streak, Floyd said they have to keep grounded.
"There have been a lot of really good teams, better teams than what we have probably along the way so we're keeping all that in perspective. The thing about streaks is that the appearance or the assumption is that you're perfect and we're certainly not perfect by any means. We have a lot of things that we can improve on and I think our players acknowledge that," Floyd said.
"Of course we're looking at other scores and trying to see what's going on in Conference USA but we're worried about ourselves and continuing to get better and not be complacent with our winning streak right now. We want to keep winning," said UTEP basketball player John Bohannon.
