YISD officials expected to announce new superintendent
By: Bill Melugin
EL PASO, Texas The Ysleta ISD board of trustees is behind closed doors as it decides who the districts new superintendent will be.
The district spent the last four months searching for someone to replace former Superintendent Michael Zolkowsi, who retired last fall.
Wednesday night, trustees were expected to name their sole finalist, and board members had seven items to go through before they discussed the superintendent, so their executive session is expected to last a while.
However, some are very unhappy with the way the search process has played out.
Arlinda Valencia, president of the Ysleta Teachers Association, spoke in front of the board and vehemently expressing her opinion in regards to the board keeping the entire process behind closed doors.
She said the board didnt receive any input from the public and failed to have any meet and greets with the candidates, which she said has been done with past superintendents.
"It went in one ear and out the other. They don't listen; that's what the problem is. They don't listen (to) community input, Valencia said.
Valencia said she doubts the school board paid attention to her criticism in the search process.
They believe they know best. It's just sort of like, mother knows best. You don't tell her what to do; she's going to do it, and I feel they have that mentality, Valencia said.
YISD officials are expected to announce the districts new superintendent when they get out of executive session.
