El Paso County Veterans Services recognized for granting loans

By: Jesse Martinez
EL PASO, Texas -- The Texas Veterans Land Board recognized El Paso County Veterans Services as one of the top officers giving loans to local veterans.

About $18 million in veterans loans from the Texas Veterans Land Board are at work in El Paso.

The board was created in 1946 to help veterans who were returning from World War II buy land for agricultural purposes. The program has changed over the years as land prices increased.

"(It can be used) anytime they're buying a home, and I don't think it only applies to first-time buyers, so if they're refinancing a home or trying to buy a home, they can apply for these funds and there's all sorts of help, said Carlos Leon, El Paso County commissioner.

Leon said any veteran who is in need of this kind of financial help should call any county commissioner so he or she can be directed on where to apply.
