Police: Four arrested in gang assault at Lower Valley bar

EL PASO, Texas The police departments gang unit arrested four people for a Jan. 9 assault incident at a Lower Valley bar.

A few minutes before midnight on Jan. 9, two victims, who were identified as C. Bustillos and R. Morales, were confronted by Raul Lopez, Eddie Mendoza, Roberto Mercado and Maria Hernandez at El Aventurero Bar at 247 S. Zaragoza Road, police said.

At one point, Lopez, 33, pointed a gun at Morales and fired nine times, police said. At the same time, Mendoza, 30, and Mercado, 34, were punching and kicking Bustillos, police said.

Police did not say the extent of the victims injuries.

The four fled the scene, and investigators were able to recover the bullet casings and a handgun at the scene, police said.

Mendoza was charged with engaging in organized criminal activity assault causing bodily injury, and his bail was set at $100,000.

Lopez was booked on the same charge as well as assault with a deadly weapon. His bail was set at $165,000.

Mercado was charged with engaging in organized criminal activity assault causing bodily injury and booked on a $25,000 bond.

Hernandez, 39, was charged with engaging in organized criminal activity aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and booked on a $25,000 bond.
