Half a ton of marijuana seized during weekend drug busts

By: Jesse Martinez
EL PASO, Texas -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized more than 1,000 pounds of marijuana in seven seizures made at El Paso border crossings over the weekend, officials said.

The largest seizure was made around 5 p.m. at the Bridge of the Americas commercial cargo facility. A drug-sniffing dog alerted officers to a tractor-trailer that had more than 300 pounds of marijuana stashed in the fifth wheel area of the empty trailer, officials said.

Officers found 206 bundles of marijuana, weighing about 329 pounds, stashed in the trailer. The estimated street value is $263,200.

This was a well-concealed drug load, however the multiple layers of enforcement CBP uses at area ports stopped this load of contraband before it made it into our community, said Hector Mancha, CBP El Paso port director.

Officials said no arrests were made, and they are investigating this case.
