Gun sales dropping nationwide

By: Bill Melugin

EL PASO, Texas --Purchases of firearms and ammunition across the nation are finally starting to slow down following fears of government gun-grabbing legislation.

Background checks through the Federal Bureau of Investigation are considered to be the most accurate way of tracking the sales of guns. According to FBI statistics, gun purchases dropped by around 30 percent in January 2014 compared to January 2013. Those stats show there were around 2.5 million background checks in January 2013, and only around 1.6 million last month.

The stats show Texas dropping in gun sales as well.

They show Texas with 130,524 background checks last month, compared to 186,890 in 2013.

"You take out the hysteria from the government, and talking about firearm legislation and whatnot, yeah, our business has kind of calmed down a little bit, but were still doing very well, said Michael Perkins, owner of Sportsmans Elite in west El Paso. "Nothing ever came of that, they never really got past talking about it. Talking about the different ways of controlling firearms and ammunition causes people to go out and panic-buy.

FBI statistics show shortly after President Obamas re-election, gun sales went up around 20 percent, but after the Sandy Hook shooting when gun control talks intensified, gun sales shot up almost 40 percent.

During this time, there was a nationwide shortage of ammunition as well. CNN reports Department of Homeland Security said that it purchased 84 million rounds of ammunition for fiscal year 2013, which was down from the prior five years when it averaged 109 million rounds each year.

"It's been challenging, with the supply shortages, sure we've seen some ups and downs as well, this time a year ago, our [rifle wall] was completely bare, and we didn't even know if we were getting another one of them coming in, Perkins said. Were still a little lighter on .22 [calibers] we still do get it, we just don't get it in the large quantities that we like to see.

Perkins told KFOX14 business was absolutely booming in 2013, and while it has started to slow down from its peak, Sportsmans Elite is still selling plenty of guns. The store offers an indoor shooting range, and an archery range as well.

"Essentially, you have that spike where you pull in some sales that you might have gotten a few months down the road, but people said oh I'd better go do it now, now those people have already bought guns and they don't need them anymore, Perkins said.

Although gun sales have dropped from their peak within the last year, they have still remained much higher than they were prior to President Obamas re-election.

The FBI stats showed Kentucky actually increased the number of guns sold, and had the most purchases in January of 2014 with close to 260,000. That doubles the number sold in the state of Texas.
