El Paso man tried to smuggle more than $400,000 worth of cocaine, officials say

By: Jesse Martinez
EL PASO, Texas Authorities kept more than 14 pounds of cocaine from entering the United States at the Bridge of the Americas border crossing Monday morning.

Officials with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection said 14.65 pounds of cocaine was found stashed inside a 1997 Chevrolet Silverado.

Shake, the drug-sniffing dog alerted officers to the vehicle, and after an X-ray scan, the drugs were found in five bundles in a hidden compartment in the radiator, officials said.

Smugglers will use any part of the vehicle they can to hide drugs, said Hector Mancha, CBP El Paso port director. Deeply concealed drug loads are a challenge but they are a challenge CBP is ready to face.

The drugs have an estimated street value of $468,800, officials said.

The 57-year-old driver, Alberto Flores Dominguez of El Paso, was turned over to federal agents in connection with the failed smuggling attempt.

Officials said they also seized 160 pounds of marijuana in three separate seizures on Monday.
