Update: Hazardous material causes police officer to fall ill, Northeast area blocked off
By: Elena Arteaga
EL PASO, Texas -- A hazardous material spill in Northeast El Paso caused an El Paso police officer to fall ill, after a black drum carrying an undetermined substance was found.
It happened just before 6:30 A.M. at Dyer and Lawrence. An El Paso police officer found the 55-gallon barrel, and called it in. About 10 gallons of the liquid spilled out of the drum.
Four El Paso fire units were at the scene, including the department's hazmat unit.
Fire crews have identified the substance as concrete sealant. As of 9:02 A.M., the El Paso Fire Dept. said the incident was under control. They said the drum had been packed up, and turned over to Storm Water officials for proper disposal.
An El Paso police officer at the scene of the incident reported feeling dizzy, and other ailments. That officer was taken to a William Beaumont Army Medical Center for an evaluation.
The area was expected to be closed for the next two hours.
