'Fun Zone' near ballpark could add to gameday experience
By: Genevieve Curtis
EL PASO, Texas--A baseball game is just the feature event; there's tons of other fun to be had before and after games.
Tuesday, the city council will take a look at plans to improve the atmosphere near the stadium on game days.
They'll consider the creation of a "Fun Zone" designed to accommodate fans in the entertainment district of Union Plaza on game days.
It's real convenient because you know you can go enjoy the game and come and you are having a good time on a weekends or maybe families with their kids they can come and eat, things like that, said Javier Rivera, who said he likes the idea of an entertainment district.
City Rep. Cortney Niland said the Fun Zone could include street closures. That could give a home field advantage to local bars and restaurants.
Niland said she wants city council to talk about the options they have, like if the Fun Zone would include every game or only special events and whether it would allow for fans to walk around with drinks.
Niland says the city could look at other communities as examples.
We go out to Phoenix for a game and they have a bunch of pubs or bars or whatever close to the ballpark. I think it would be a good thing for El Paso, said Rivera.
Plus, an entertainment zone could keep fans spending money in the city long after the last pitch has been thrown.
City council will discuss the fun zone at its meeting Tuesday morning.
