Socorro City Council approves infrastructure improvements
By: Stacey Welsh
SOCORRO, Texas -- The Socorro City Council recently approved $2 million in funding for capital improvement projects. In addition to equipment to clean up flooding, the money will fund improvements to neighborhood streets and help put plans in motion to build a new city hall.
City leaders told KFOX14 Socorro can't re-model the city hall and municipal court building on Rio Vista Road because it's considered a historic building.
"Right now, we're divided up into two buildings. It does create more traffic, because you have to go from one area to another. If you have to go back to the court, you come back over here," Socorro Mayor Jesus Ruiz said.
The city currently uses the Rio Vista city hall building for council meetings, and city employee offices are located in Socorro's administration building on Horizon Boulevard.
Ruiz said if a new city hall is built, the current building could turn into a museum or library in the future. However, some resident do not agree with the idea of a new building.
"With having to remodel or relocate, the building that sits right there suits everybody just fine in my opinion," Socorro resident Rudy Cruz Jr. said.
The money is left over from loans past city council members took out.
Socorro also plans to put hundreds of thousands toward improvements to neighborhood streets, as well as new traffic signals around the city.
What I recommended to council, is to go ahead and tackle one subdivision, finish paving that subdivision and then move on to another. That way, there's no sense of favoritism," Ruiz said.
"Without a doubt, my neighborhood is one of the first neighborhoods affected by water damage," Cruz said of the September floods in Socorro.
Ruiz said city council representatives will recommend which streets in their districts need the most repairs, and the city will prioritize after that.
City council members will vote on 10 million more dollars in loans in the next few months. That money will fund continuing these projects over the next five years.
